Journalism Club: The Art of the Interview

Today we’re going to talk about what makes a good interview, and also what makes one that maybe isn’t so great.

We’re going to conduct an imaginary interview with Eddie Redmayne.

how to conduct a journalism interview

You know. This guy.

Me: Hey, Eddie!

Eddie: Hey.

Me: What is your favorite color?

Eddie: Blue.

Me: What is your favorite food?

Eddie: Chicken salad sandwich.

Me: Do you like pizza?

Eddie: Yes.

Me: What is your favorite book?

Eddie: The Bible.

What makes this interview work? Or not? How could the questions be better?

Do yes or no questions work in a published interview? Why or why not?

Your assignment is to come up with five interview questions. Good ones. Dig deep. Get your interviewee to give ups some delicious information.

Create a Google Doc

Rename it “Interview questions”

Share it with me

Write your questions. Come up with some GOOD ones; interesting, but not too personal.

As soon as next week, we will take turns interviewing one another. The question that gets the most interesting information out of the interviewee gets a prize.
